Toronto Move-In and Move-Out Cleaning: A Kitchen-First Handover

Organize a kitchen-led move clean with clear appliance, cupboard and room scope before the keys change hands.

Choose the outcome before choosing the date

Move-in and move-out cleaning have different practical goals. A departing household wants the agreed areas ready for handover; an arriving household wants usable food preparation and living spaces before unpacking. Both benefit from a kitchen-first plan because cupboards and appliances are easier to assess when they are empty. Start by identifying which surfaces need to be ready, who can authorize access and when the contents will actually be removed.

An empty-looking property may still contain food, packing materials, contractor dust or furniture that prevents a full clean. Ask for an accurate description close to the appointment date. If another person will receive the keys or inspect the result, establish the same written task list with them in advance. Cleaning can address an agreed scope; it cannot promise that a third party will accept a property or settle a tenancy dispute.

Put the kitchen at the centre of the handover

List the oven interior, door surfaces, cooktop, reachable hood exterior, worktops, backsplash and sink separately. Distinguish cupboard exteriors from emptied interiors and identify the refrigerator as an additional appliance when its interior is requested. A microwave, second oven or secondary kitchenette also needs to be named. This makes the amount of work visible and avoids the ambiguous phrase appliances included, which may mean only exterior wiping to one person and full accessible interiors to another.

Food should be removed or safely stored by the household before appliance interiors are cleaned. Decide where contents can go and do not leave perishable items on the counter while the wider property is being cleaned. Cleaning staff should not be expected to decide which food, medication or personal items to discard. An emptied, accessible compartment is a clear task; sorting a household's possessions is a different service and should be discussed separately.

Schedule around movers and other work

A move clean is easiest to evaluate after packing and moving are finished in the relevant rooms. If movers will still be carrying items through the space, agree on a realistic sequence and recognize that traffic can re-soil finished floors. Painting, repairs and deliveries should also be considered. The property may need a different appointment if construction work is still producing dust or obstructing surfaces. Ordinary move cleaning should not be mistaken for hazardous-dust remediation.

For condos, confirm the approved elevator and loading arrangements with the building. For houses, confirm entry, parking and which doors can remain secured during the work. Utilities and ordinary lighting need to be available for the agreed tasks. A same-day key exchange leaves little margin for unexpected access delays, so communicate the handover deadline when enquiring. Availability and completion timing require confirmation rather than being implied by a submitted form.

Inspect the appliance before trying to restore it

An empty oven reveals residue that may have been hidden by trays, but it can also reveal worn enamel, damaged seals or old scratches. Record visible condition before treatment. Follow the exact model's cleaning directions and exclude disassembly. A move deadline is not a reason to apply a stronger chemical to an incompatible liner or to take apart door glass. Areas between sealed panels belong in a discussion with an appliance professional.

The same restraint applies to the range and refrigerator. Do not disconnect gas, water or electrical services to reach a hidden area. Moving a heavy appliance can damage flooring or connections and is not an automatic part of a cleaning appointment. If a landlord, owner or installer arranges safe movement separately, the newly accessible surface can be assessed and added by agreement. State these boundaries before the day so there is no last-minute surprise.

Define the other rooms with equal care

For bathrooms, list fixtures and surfaces, identifying any mineral buildup or damaged grout in the initial description. For bedrooms and living areas, define reachable dusting, baseboards and floors. Empty wardrobes can be included when stated, but high shelving and exterior windows are not assumed. An entry, hallway or stair area should appear on the task list if it is part of the handover. A garage or unfinished basement needs a separate conversation about condition and suitability.

Many move requests include wall marks. Explain whether these are small accessible spots or a request to wash entire walls, and confirm the paint's cleaning limits. Mark removal is not guaranteed where paint is worn, flat or already damaged. Adhesive residue, mould, pest contamination, sharps and bodily waste should not be treated as ordinary add-ons. Those conditions may require a different qualified service and a revised plan before routine cleaning can proceed.

Use a handover checklist that can be checked

A useful completion list names surfaces rather than promising an undefined deep clean. For the kitchen, record the agreed oven areas, cooking surface, hood exterior, emptied cupboard interiors, counters, backsplash, sink and floor. Then add the selected bathroom and living-space tasks. If an item is not completed, note the reason and the next action. This is fairer to everyone than discovering at the final minute that an inaccessible area was silently assumed to be included.

Photographs may help document visible condition if the household agrees, but they cannot prove a surface is disinfected or reveal every concealed defect. Avoid showing keys, access codes and personal paperwork. Review the result while there is still an opportunity to discuss an overlooked removable mark. A final inspection should be cooperative and specific: this shelf, this handle, this patch of residue, rather than an impossible requirement to make an older property appear unused.

Prepare the kitchen for the next household

Once the agreed surfaces are cleaned, follow any product-specific rinsing and drying requirements before food, utensils and storage containers are returned. Keep cupboard and appliance interiors accessible long enough to check that they are dry as appropriate. Do not mask an unresolved odour with perfume and call it complete; identify whether it relates to a remaining source, a damaged material or a problem needing investigation.

For move-in, unpack the kitchen deliberately so clean surfaces are not immediately covered by dirty boxes. For move-out, leave a clear record of the completed scope and any excluded areas. Toronto postal-code eligibility concerns the physical property being cleaned, not the address from which someone is moving. A move into or out of another municipality does not extend this Toronto-only service area.

Questions before you clean

Does a move clean guarantee a deposit or handover approval?

No. The service should be assessed against its agreed cleaning scope; tenancy and handover decisions involve other parties and conditions.

Must cupboards be empty?

For interior cleaning, arrange empty access in advance and decide who will remove and replace contents.

Can cleaners work while movers are present?

That needs advance agreement. Moving activity can restrict access and re-soil areas, so the sequence and finish expectations must be realistic.
